you loved because you had it in you
the love you felt wasn't borrowed from someone else. it came from you. it always has.
There is a version of love we are taught to chase.
The kind that arrives like a rescue. The kind that finally makes us feel worthy. The kind that promises, Now you'll be okay.
But one of the hardest truths I have ever learned is this:
If someone loved you well, it wasn't because they carried love that you lacked. It was because your heart already knew how to recognize it.
You loved because you had love inside of you.
Not because they gave it to you.
That realization changes everything.
Because if your kindness disappeared the moment another person walked away, it was never yours to begin with.
But that's not what happens.
You still comfort strangers. You still cry during beautiful movies. You still smile at old dogs. You still notice sunsets. You still want the people you care about to be safe.
The love didn't leave.
The person did.
Those are not the same thing.
For a long time, I believed certain people were magical.
I thought they were the reason I laughed more. The reason music sounded different. The reason ordinary days felt extraordinary.
But eventually I realized something uncomfortable.
They weren't carrying the magic.
I was.
My curiosity. My imagination. My tenderness. My ability to see beauty where other people walked right past it.
Those things belonged to me long before they arrived.
And they remained after they left.
Grief has a cruel way of convincing us that someone took pieces of us when they walked away.
Sometimes relationships end.
Sometimes people die.
Sometimes life changes so completely that we don't recognize ourselves anymore.
It can feel as though the light disappeared with them.
But maybe...
Maybe they simply reflected a light that was already burning inside you.
Like moonlight on water.
The moon isn't in the lake.
The lake was always capable of reflecting light.
You are, too.
That means joy is still possible.
Wonder is still possible.
Connection is still possible.
Not because you'll replace someone.
People are not replaceable.
But because your capacity to love never belonged to them.
It belonged to you.
Maybe that's what healing actually is.
Not becoming someone new.
Not forgetting.
Not pretending it never hurt.
Healing is slowly remembering who you were before you believed someone else was responsible for your light.
Your nervous system can learn safety again.
Your heart can learn trust again.
Your spirit can find meaning again.
Not because someone else fixed you.
Because you were never empty.
You were simply carrying the weight of believing your love came from somewhere outside yourself.
It didn't.
It came from you.
It always has.
So if today you're grieving someone who left...
Or mourning the version of yourself you used to be...
Pause for a moment.
Notice the way your chest still softens when you witness kindness.
Notice the way beauty still catches your attention.
Notice the way hope keeps quietly refusing to die.
Those aren't accidents.
They're evidence.
Evidence that what you loved wasn't borrowed.
It was born within you.
And anything born within you...
Can bloom again.
