You don't have to survive tomorrow today. A gentle, practical guide for the seasons when just getting through the day is enough.

when life won't let up: a survival guide

make the mountain smaller

Can you make it through today?

No?

Make it through this hour.

Too much?

Make it through the next minute.

Still too much?

Take one slow breath.

You don't have to survive tomorrow today.

meet yourself where you are

Stop aiming for your normal. Aim for enough. In survival mode, enough is success.

  • Can't shower? PTA bath or wipes + clean t-shirt.
  • Can't brush your teeth? Colgate wisps or mouthwash.
  • Can't cook? Make a bowl of cereal or PB&J.
  • Can't clean? Take one basket or bag and fill it, put it in a room, then close the damn door.

protect your heart

Give yourself permission to disappear for a while. Watching other people thrive while you are trying to survive can feel like a knife in the heart.

Delete the apps. Block. Unfollow.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Social media is often 1% of the whole picture.

stop saying "you're fine"

Let your therapist know that you are not doing well, despite trying your best. Admitting you are struggling is not a weakness — being vulnerable is a strength.

make life automatic

Have a work "uniform" — it helps not having to figure out what to wear if you have a plan. A nice fitting pair of pants, a few shirts, a comfortable rotation. If you have kids, having neutrals and basics you can mix and match means they look cute and you keep your sanity.

Headphones can drown out the noise. Listen to your favorite music, pop in a podcast, play a scandalous YouTube documentary. If you feel called to listen to a meditation or a preacher — do it. You are looking for relief.

hire your village

Sometimes buying back your time is one of the healthiest investments you can make.

Hire the gardener. Hire someone to clean your house every other week. Order your meds online. Have a telehealth therapy session without leaving your couch. Have the groceries delivered.

As someone who has successfully burned themselves the hell out trying to do everything, I cannot stress this enough. If money is an issue, start a Buy Nothing Barter group — maybe you can trade some tasks.

stop bullying yourself

If a stranger called your best friend lazy, pathetic, or worthless, you'd probably have a few words for them.

Yet many of us say those exact things to ourselves every single day.

You deserve the same compassion you offer everyone else. Speak to yourself like someone you're trying to save — not someone you're trying to punish.

lower the bar

Not forever.

Just for today.

Maybe laundry waits. Maybe dinner is frozen pizza. Maybe your house isn't spotless. Maybe answering one email is enough.

Survival mode isn't the season for perfection. It's the season for preservation.

If you're finding it hard to function most days, or you're feeling hopeless or unsafe, you don't have to carry that alone. Reaching out to a trusted person, therapist, or healthcare provider is an act of courage — not failure.

Go easy on yourself.

You're worthy of the same compassion you so freely give to everyone else.
